🇭🇺 What is “Krémes”?

Krémes (pronounced: kray-mesh) is a beloved Hungarian dessert made with layers of puff pastry and a thick, luscious vanilla custard filling. It’s served cold, dusted with powdered sugar, and it’s pure comfort in every bite — found in nearly every Hungarian bakery.


🧾 Ingredients:

For the pastry layers:

  • 2 sheets of puff pastry (store-bought or homemade)

For the vanilla custard filling:

  • 1 liter (4 cups) whole milk
  • 8 egg yolks
  • 200 g (1 cup) sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract or 1 tbsp vanilla sugar
  • 100 g (¾ cup) all-purpose flour
  • 60 g (½ cup) cornstarch
  • 50 g (3.5 tbsp) unsalted butter

For topping:

  • Powdered sugar (for dusting)
