Főzelék Hungarian 🇭🇺

Főzelék is a traditional Hungarian dish—somewhere between a soup and a stew—made by simmering vegetables in a lightly thickened sauce. It’s simple, comforting, and packed with flavor.

Here’s a basic and traditional version for Green Pea Főzelék (Borsófőzelék), but you can swap the peas for potatoes, spinach, lentils, cabbage, or green beans.


🇭🇺 Green Pea Főzelék (Borsófőzelék)

📝 Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp sunflower oil or butter
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cups green peas (fresh or frozen)
  • 1½ cups water or vegetable broth
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 tsp sugar (optional)
  • 1 bay leaf (optional)

🥄 To thicken:

  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup milk (or use sour cream for richer flavor)

Optional:

  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • Chopped fresh parsley or dill for garnish
