Ingredients (6–8 servings):

For the rolls:

  • 1 large head of cabbage (savoy or white)
  • 1 ½ lbs (700 g) ground pork (or pork/beef mix)
  • 1 cup (200 g) rice (parboiled or half-cooked)
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tsp Hungarian sweet paprika
  • 1 tsp caraway seeds (optional)
  • Salt & black pepper, to taste

For the sauce:

  • 2 tbsp lard or oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 tbsp flour (optional, for thickening)
  • 1–2 tbsp Hungarian paprika
  • 2 cups (500 ml) tomato juice or crushed tomatoes
  • 3 cups (700 ml) sauerkraut (with some juice)
  • 2–3 cups (500–700 ml) broth or water
  • Bay leaves (2–3)

For serving:
