🧾 Ingredients (4–6 servings)

For the meatballs:

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground pork (or half pork, half beef)
  • ½ cup (100 g) rice (parboiled, not fully cooked)
  • 1 small onion, finely grated or minced
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon sweet Hungarian paprika
  • Salt & black pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped (optional)

For the tomato sauce:

  • 2 tablespoons oil or lard
  • 2 tablespoons flour (for roux)
  • 1 tablespoon sugar (traditional Hungarian sauces are a little sweet)
  • 3 cups (750 ml) tomato juice or passata
  • 1–2 bay leaves
  • Salt & pepper, to taste
