1. Make the Dough:
- In a bowl, mix warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it foam for 5–10 minutes.
- Add melted butter, egg, lemon zest, and salt. Stir in flour gradually.
- Knead the dough for 7–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
2. Prepare the Apple Filling:
- In a skillet, melt butter. Add diced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
- Cook over medium heat until apples are tender (5–7 minutes). Stir in vanilla and let cool.
3. Roll & Fill:
- Roll out dough into a 16×12-inch rectangle.
- Spread with softened butter, sprinkle cinnamon sugar, and evenly spread the apple mixture.
- Roll up tightly from the long edge and cut into 12 slices.
4. Second Rise:
- Place rolls in a greased 9×13″ pan. Cover and let rise 30–40 minutes.
5. Bake:
- Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 25–30 minutes, or until golden brown.
6. Glaze:
- Whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla.
- Drizzle over warm rolls before serving.
