🥘 Instructions:
- Sauté onions
In a large pot, heat lard/oil over medium heat. Add chopped onions and cook until soft and golden. - Add paprika
Remove the pot from heat, sprinkle in the sweet paprika, and stir immediately to prevent burning. Return to low heat. - Add chicken
Place chicken pieces in the pot. Season with salt and pepper. Brown lightly on all sides for flavor. - Add garlic, tomato, and pepper
Stir in the minced garlic, chopped tomato, and bell pepper (if using). Cook for about 5 minutes. - Simmer
Add enough chicken broth or water to just cover the chicken. Cover the pot and simmer on low heat for 45–60 minutes, until the chicken is tender. - Prepare the sour cream mixture
In a bowl, mix sour cream and flour until smooth. Temper it by adding a few tablespoons of the hot cooking liquid, then stir the mixture into the pot. - Finish the sauce
Simmer for another 5–10 minutes uncovered, until the sauce thickens slightly. Adjust seasoning if needed.
🍽️ Serve with:
- Nokedli (Hungarian dumplings) – traditional and perfect for soaking up the sauce
- Boiled potatoes or egg noodles work well too
