Hungarian Chicken Paprikash🇭🇺

🥘 Instructions:

  1. Sauté onions
In a large pot, heat lard/oil over medium heat. Add chopped onions and cook until soft and golden.
  2. Add paprika
Remove the pot from heat, sprinkle in the sweet paprika, and stir immediately to prevent burning. Return to low heat.
  3. Add chicken
Place chicken pieces in the pot. Season with salt and pepper. Brown lightly on all sides for flavor.
  4. Add garlic, tomato, and pepper
Stir in the minced garlic, chopped tomato, and bell pepper (if using). Cook for about 5 minutes.
  5. Simmer
Add enough chicken broth or water to just cover the chicken. Cover the pot and simmer on low heat for 45–60 minutes, until the chicken is tender.
  6. Prepare the sour cream mixture
In a bowl, mix sour cream and flour until smooth. Temper it by adding a few tablespoons of the hot cooking liquid, then stir the mixture into the pot.
  7. Finish the sauce
Simmer for another 5–10 minutes uncovered, until the sauce thickens slightly. Adjust seasoning if needed.

🍽️ Serve with:

  • Nokedli (Hungarian dumplings) – traditional and perfect for soaking up the sauce
  • Boiled potatoes or egg noodles work well too
