Hungarian Chilled Sour Cherry Soup (Hideg Meggyleves)

Ingredients
- 500 g (about 1 lb) sour cherries, pitted (fresh or frozen)
- 1 L (4 cups) water
- 150 g (¾ cup) granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
