Hungarian Haluski (Cabbage and Noodles🇭🇺

Instructions

  1. Cook noodles
    • Boil egg noodles in salted water until just tender. Drain and set aside.
  2. Fry cabbage & onion
    • In a large skillet or Dutch oven, melt butter.
    • Add onion and sauté until golden.
    • Stir in cabbage, season with salt, pepper, and paprika.
    • Cook on medium heat for 15–20 minutes, stirring often, until cabbage is soft, caramelized, and slightly browned.
  3. Optional meaty version
    • If using bacon/sausage, cook it first until crispy, then use the drippings + butter to fry the cabbage.
  4. Combine
    • Toss cooked noodles into the cabbage mixture. Adjust seasoning with more salt and pepper if needed.
  5. Serve
    • Garnish with fresh parsley and enjoy warm.

👉 In Hungary, some families also top it with a spoon of sour cream or even serve it alongside roasted meats.

Would you like me to also show you the homemade Hungarian nokedli (spaetzle-style dumplings) version instead of using packaged noodles? That’s even more traditional.
